Black Humor

Black humour (from the French Humour Noir) is comedy that is inspired by dark themes, usually death. It was first referenced by the French surrealist theoretician Andre Breton, who stated Jonothan Swift to be the originator of the subgenre. Black humour was originally named gallows humour. In black comedy, they use taboo subjects and use humour to make light of them. It can often make people feel better about stressful situations that they have experienced as after time they learn to laugh about it.

Shaun of the dead is a very popular dark humour as it uses the idea of the apocalypse and death as a comedy. They make the deaths funny and amusing to make the audience find it amusing and comedic. It follows the story of Shaun as he tries to get him ex girlfriend back in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. He also uses the opportunity to reconcile with his mum and stepdad, however their deaths are used to create comedy with their timing and dramaticness. Part of the comedy comes from the fact that they use strange objects as weapons such as poles, bats and other objects not usually used for weapons.

Sweeney Todd is another black comedy. It follows the life of Sweeney Todd, formerly Benjamin Barker, the demon barber of fleet street, as he seeks revenge for the death of his wife and the loss of his daughter. He uses his barber shop as a front for murder, tipping them to the basement where his "friend" Mrs Lovett makes them into pies. It ends with him killing Mrs Lovett in a furnace. The musical numbers give the film most of its comedy value, however the actors themselves bring a large amount of comedy to the role. The performance from the actors ad to the comedy too as the actors are very diverse and can use subtle facial expressions to generate humour.
